The German Society is on the Northeast corner of 7th and Spring Garden Streets, within walking distance of Philadelphia's Old City, Northern Liberties neighborhood, and Independence National Historic Park, and right across the street from the Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site.

The Society's offices, classrooms, and library can be entered through the parking lot door on the building's east side. The entrance facing Spring Garden Street is open for special events only. An elevator entrance is available on the Spring Garden Street side, directly to the left of the main entrance. Guests requiring use of the elevator during business hours should call ahead to make arrangements for the gate to be unlocked. Please take a look at our FAQs of Visiting page before dropping by.

Public Transit: The Society is only minutes away from Center City and University City (Penn) via the Frankford Elevated (the El). Visitors traveling by train to Center City can make easy connections to the El at all 30th St., Suburban, and Market East Stations. From the Spring Garden St. El stop, walk west on Spring Garden Street approximately five blocks to Seventh Street.

From I-76: Take I-676 East to the 8th Street exit. Go straight one block and turn left on 7th St. Turn right onto Spring Garden St. Almost immediately to your left is a break in the median to allow you to turn into the Society's driveway and parking lot.

From I-95 North: Take Callowhill Street exit. Bear right on Callowhill St. and turn right on 7th St. Turn right onto Spring Garden St. Almost immediately to your left is a break in the median to allow you to turn into the Society's driveway and parking lot.

From I-95 South: Take Callowhill Street exit. Turn left on Callowhill St. Turn right onto 7th Street.  Turn right onto Spring Garden St. Almost immediately to your left is a break in the median to allow you to turn into the Society's driveway and parking lot.

From NJ (Benjamin Franklin Bridge): Cross bridge. Go to first light. Turn right on Franklin Street (7th St.). Turn right onto Spring Garden St. Almost immediately to your left is a break in the median to allow you to turn into the Society's driveway and parking lot.

Parking: The German Society has a parking lot, adjacent to the building, with an entrance in the middle of the block between 6th and 7th Streets on Spring Garden (across from the break in the median).

The lot holds roughly 30 cars, and all visitors and members of the Society are welcome (and encouraged) to use the parking lot.  Please make sure you park behind the black gate. The parking area under the mural and in front of the gate does not belong to us, and you will be in danger of towing if you park there. Outside of business hours, there is usually plenty of street parking along Spring Garden Street (barring any other major activities happening in the area at the same time). Some of the street parking has a two-hour limit or is metered, and those restrictions are enforced by the Philadelphia Parking Authority. There are also a limited number of parking lots in the neighborhood with weekend hours.
